Ok If you are looking to book a cheap hotel we presume this is to package you own holiday together, this will usually save you money. Check out our tips on booking cheap flights BUT don't dismiss the package holiday as you can sometimes save money especially when booking late holiday deals. Make sure you check out our tips on booking cheap holidays.

As with most things the best way making sure you get the cheapest hotel price is by shopping around, use our list of hotel suppliers to help

If possible try and be flexible on your dates. If you are not going away with children try and book outside school holidays - Dates just before and just after the holidays tend to be that much cheaper as the travel companies struggle to sell these.

These are typically the dates where you will find cheapest prices:

...........................November to mid December (1st to 15th December are usually some of the cheapest prices of the year)
...........................January to before February half term (early Jan is usually particularly cheap)

If you are not going away in the school holidays we would always recommend a quick Google search so you can find out when they are in your area as they do change around the country and Scotland is different to the above.

Try and be flexible where you want to go as there can be some really good deals for destinations that are not in the EU like Turkey, Egypt etc so these are definately worth considering. Especially now as the pound value against the Euro is at an all time low, going outside the EU will mean your spending money will stretch further.

Always check to see if there are any local holidays, especially if going to cities as this may drive the price up if there is a major event in town!

If you know where you want to go check directly on the hotels own website (if they have one). This will give you a benchmark of the price BUT they aren't always the cheapest - If you are going on thier website you probably want to book so they try and make a bit extra money.

Check the major hotel suppliers in the UK, these companies have teams of people buying hotels in resort so thier buying power can usually drive down the price, look at HolidayNights, Hotels4U, YouTravel, lowcostbeds, alpharooms and Monarch hotels to name the best ones. All thier links are here

You can use a hotel comparison site like travelsupermarket BUT they are usually supplied by the companies above so are usually more expensive after they add thier cut unless they have an exclusive deal.

Be careful of any 'On request' rooms these are where the availability isn't known and the company needs to check with the hotel - If you find a similar bargain we'd advise booking that as if you wait you may not get the room and the other bargain may have gone.

Look for a villa! We all know someone or have heard of someone that owns an apartment abroad. Over the last 10 ears there was a massive boomin people buying property overseas with the idea of renting it out but there were alot of people who all jumped on the bandwaggon so the market got flooded. There are some really cheap bargains to have - especially if you are going ias a family or an even bigger group. HolidayNights has a good selection of villas in the main holiday resorts so it is well worth checking them out. The hotel names seem to start with 'RRP', 'RS' and 'BHI' so keep an eye out for them when you search.

Once you have chosen the hotel you have probably never heard of it before so it is always useful to do a serch on a website such as tripadvisor or holidays uncovered as people who have stayed there before will write what they think and even score it out of 10!
